The origin of progressivism was the Greenback Labor Party of the 1870’s and the Populist Pary of the 1890’s. Roosevelt had used force against a mining company to give workers a higher pay and lower working hours. The Elkins Act (1903) was created against the railroad companies. The Hepburn Act (1906) said that free passes, with the hint of bribery, were severely restricted and the Interstate Commerce Commission was expanded. Also, Roosevelt sought to stop bad trusts, such as J. P. Morgan and empire builder James Hill who were going to create a monopoly on the railroads of the Northwest. Roosevelt caused the Meat Inspection Act (1906) and the Pure Food and Drug Act (1906) to get passed to improve the quality of food especially meat (nasty slaughter houses). Roosevelt was big on conserving the natural resources of the US. He made federal reserves of about 125 million acres. He stopped the lumberman from destroying the forests. He was on both the nature people’s side and the people who wanted the natural resources. Lastly, he did many other things like built dams. 5. Many of Taft’s policies offended progressives, and mainly Roosevelt. Roosevelt was infuriated when Taft pressed an antitrust suit against the U. S. Steel Corporation because Roosevelt was personally involved in one of the mergers that prompted the suit. Taft also passed an upward tariff revision called Payne-Aldrich Bill. The Ballinger-Pinchot quarrel, where Taft dismissed Gifford Pinchot (chief of the Agricultural Departments Division of Forestry) because he criticized the opening of public lands in Whyoming, Montana, and Alaska. He was a Rooseveltian so Taft was criticized. 6. The Republican party split in the spring of 1910 and Roosevelt came back in the summer of 1910 and stirred up a tempest. Deviations From Raoult's Law If there are adhesive or cohesive forces between two liquids, there will be deviations from Raoults law. There is negative deviation when the vapor pressure is lower than expected from the law. This occurs when forces between particles are stronger than those between particles in pure liquids. This behavior is observed in a mixture of chloroform and acetone. Here, hydrogen bonds cause the deviation. Another example of negative deviation is in a solution of hydrochloric acid and water. Positive deviation occurs when the cohesion between similar molecules exceeds adhesion between unlike molecules. The result is higher than expected vapor pressure. Both components of the mixture escape solution more readily than if the components were pure. This behavior is observed in mixtures of benzene and methanol and mixtures of chloroform and ethanol. Out of the three topologies, i.e. ring, bus and star, star topology is the most feasible one, as due to the failure of a computer or a segment of wire or a node, the other network nodes would not be affected at all. For star topology the basic hardware required for connectivity are as follows: For a smaller LAN with a maximum of 10 computers Hub works fine but for a larger LAN a switch gives better efficiency compared to a hub. The reason is that the hub broadcast the data packet to every node, hence all other nodes except the destination node thereby ignoring the broadcasted data packet where as the switch store the MAC addresses of each node and would send the data packet only to the destination node. UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cable: This type of cable is the most feasible one as it is cheaper and it gives a data rate of 10 Mbps. Further more in a larger LAN setup, if the distance between two switches or between switch and a terminal (computer) is more than 100 meters than we have to use a repeater device, which enhances the signal strength so that it can reach the destination. Hence for every 100 meters we have to use a repeater device. Apart from these network components, all the computers, which are going to participate as a node in the network must have a LAN card. Every computer must have to be joined directly to a switch by the help of single twisted pair cable. In case of larger number of computer, then the switches should have to be connected with each other by the help of cross twisted pair cable connection. When all the computers are physically connected with each other to form a LAN setup, then the network operating system should have to be installed and configured on every computer so that they can communicate with each other. Since a LAN must have at least one domain server so in order to make a computer to act as domain server, we have to install a server operating system like Windows 2003.
